Youth Inc.

How did it begin?

Youth Incorporated was originated as a grant written many years ago (1944) by John Meyer, a former Minneapolis Public School Board member, for the children of Minneapolis.

What is the goal?

It was designed to provide extra supplement in reading to strengthen and reinforce skills.

How much service is provided?

The program provides up to thirty hours per child in grades 1-8.

Is it affiliated with Minneapolis?

The program is totally separate from Minneapolis Public Schools.

Who is the contact for each school?

The contact person is each school's social worker.

What is the format?

The typical set up is one or two students per group for 30 or 45 minutes. It is set up with the classroom teacher. The days of week and time of day are determined by the tutor and classroom teacher. This is very flexible.

What grades can be served?

Students in grades 1-8 are eligible in the fall.

What is the qualifying criteria?

Youth Inc. provides the application for service at onset with the qualifying criteria:
  • Student reads between10th and 40th % as measured by standardized test.
  • Student cannot be receiving Special Education

What are tutors paid?

Tutors are paid $17.00 / hour.

What is the referral process?

Classroom Teacher refers students for service by filling out the application for service form.

How is provider paid?

A time card is filled out and mailed in monthly.

How is progress evaluated?

Ending assessment with final evaluation form with teacher and tutor.

Can a tutor work with more than one student at a time?

A tutor can work with up to 2 students at a time as long as the tutoring is individualized to meet each student's needs.

If I tutor 2 students at once, will I get paid separately for each student?

You will still get paid $17/hour that should be split between both student's 30 hour contract.

Can a student be tutored by youth Incorporated more than 1 year?

Yes, if they still meet the criteria and if the student is a priority for that school for Youth Incorporate funds.

How does the tutor determine what materials and strategies to use?

Consultation with the classroom teacher and information from the referral should give direction as to areas of instruction.

If I am hired by Youth Incorporated, does that mean I work for the Minneapolis Public Schools? Do I earn seniority?

No, Youth Incorporated hires you as an independent contractor. There is no seniority.

Since this is an independent contract, will information about my wages be sent to the IRS?

All earnings of $600 or more will be reported to the IRS

Where can we find tutors?

Some schools use their educational assistants after their regular duty day is over. Some use parents, retired teachers or teachers who work part time.
